Ten years ago, Chief Jester Kevin faced a challenging class of fifth graders. In an attempt to get their attention, he abandoned the history textbook and wrote a musical history revue for the class to perform — The Revolutionary Revue — an hour of song, dance and comedy about the founding of our nation. Success! A math musical followed, and other shows with an academic bent.
Kevin began taking piano lessons with David Hastings, but conversation always turned to musical theater. D. Hastings, it turned out, was a musical theater guru, an old hand at every aspect of the business. Piano lessons were soon abandoned in favor of charting a new course through the perilous waters of musical theater.
Jester Educational Theater was born on June 1, 2013 amid much fanfare, which amounted to the founder eating a chocolate bar. Okay, not much fanfare, but the chocolate was highly satisfying.
Nonprofit Jester Educational Theater performs original musicals for grade school audiences with a special focus on high-needs, high-poverty schools.
Our shows present math and social studies through the sparkle of musical theater. Not only do students learn important academic content, they are also exposed to musical theater with live musical accompaniment. For many of the thousands of kids we reach each year, our shows will be their first experience with the magic of musical theater, and for some, the only.
